Long before JagMangal Social Foundation was established, the values that define the institution today were being lived through everyday actions, responsible leadership, and a deep commitment to society. Across generations, these principles evolved from enterprise to service, from community leadership to social responsibility, ultimately shaping the vision that guides JagMangal today.
This is the story of the people, principles, and moments that transformed inherited values into an enduring institutional legacy.

Every enduring institution begins with a set of values long before it begins with a name. For JagMangal, one of those earliest values was trust—earned through integrity, fairness, and a genuine commitment to serving people.
Around 1902, in the historic trading town of Yeola, Maharashtra, Dwarkanath Vitthalsa Gujarathi established a business that became known not only for the diversity of goods it offered but for the confidence it inspired within the community. At a time when commerce depended more on personal character than formal contracts, reputation was the true measure of success.
Operating as a General Merchant and Commission Agent, the establishment supplied household essentials, agricultural products, textiles, hardware, and precious metals under one roof. Long before modern retail emerged, it served as a trusted centre where quality, fairness, and dependable service defined every interaction.
For Dwarkanath, enterprise was never solely about commerce. Business was a means to build relationships, create opportunities, and strengthen the community. Customers returned not simply because of the products they purchased, but because they trusted the values behind the business.
More than a century later, that same belief continues to shape JagMangal. Trust remains the foundation of every partnership, every programme, and every initiative undertaken by the Foundation. While the institution now serves society through education, skill development, safety, sustainability, and community empowerment, the principle remains unchanged:

Leadership Through Service

The trust earned through enterprise soon found a broader purpose. As the family’s standing within the community grew, so did its sense of responsibility. Leadership was no longer expressed only through business—it began to take shape through active participation in community life and social progress.
By 1911, Dwarkanath Vitthalsa Gujarathi had become recognised not only as a respected entrepreneur but also as a civic-minded community leader. Historical records document his participation in the First Maharashtra Dasa Shrimali Conference held in Yeola, where he served on the Food Committee and contributed financially towards the successful organisation of the conference. These contributions reflected a belief that leadership carried responsibilities beyond personal or commercial success.
The conference itself represented an important moment of progressive social thinking. Among its resolutions were calls to discourage the practice of dowry and to support a higher minimum marriage age for girls—ideas that reflected a commitment to dignity, education, and social reform. Participation in such an initiative demonstrated that meaningful leadership is measured not only by what we achieve individually, but by the positive change we help create within society.
This period marked an important evolution in the family’s legacy. The values of trust and enterprise that had established a respected business were now guiding community leadership and collective responsibility. Service became an extension of character, and leadership became a commitment to improving society for future generations.
More than a century later, this belief continues to inspire JagMangal’s work. Through programmes that promote education, responsible citizenship, leadership development, road safety, sustainability, and community empowerment, the Foundation carries forward the same principle that meaningful progress begins with serving others.

Education Became Our Identity

The greatest inheritance a family can leave is not wealth it is the ability to learn, to teach and to inspire others.
The values of integrity, service, and community leadership nurtured by the previous generation found their strongest expression through education. Teaching was never viewed as merely a profession—it became a lifelong commitment to shaping lives, strengthening communities, and creating opportunities for future generations.
Jagdish Dwarkanath Gujarathi faced unimaginable hardship at an early age. He lost his mother when he was just five years old, and his father only two years later. Orphaned before the age of seven, he learned resilience, responsibility, and self-reliance long before most children begin to understand life’s challenges.
Rather than allowing adversity to define his future, he chose education as his path forward. He dedicated more than 25 years to teaching, including over a decade at the Zilla Parishad Girls’ School, Andarsul, Taluka Yeola, District Nashik. At a time when girls’ education was still overcoming significant social and cultural barriers, he firmly believed that every child deserved the opportunity to learn, grow, and build a better future through education.
His commitment was reflected not only in the classroom but also in the journey he undertook every day. Cycling nearly 20 kilometres daily to reach the school, he never allowed distance or hardship to stand in the way of his responsibility.
Every kilometre he travelled was an investment in the future of his students, proving that true education is measured not by convenience, but by commitment.
Beyond the classroom, he served for more than a decade as a postman in the rural areas of Sinnar, connecting families through letters, while his passion for art reflected his belief that creativity and education together shape confident, compassionate, and responsible individuals. He was remembered for his honesty, humility, discipline, and unwavering integrity.
His life transformed education from a profession into a lasting family value. Today, that same belief continues through JagMangal, where education, skill development, and youth empowerment remain at the heart of every initiative.

A Skill in Your Hands is a Lifetime of Dignity

Education prepares individuals for life. Skills empower them to build it.
The belief in education created a strong foundation, but changing times revealed a new reality. Knowledge alone was no longer enough. Individuals also needed practical skills, confidence, and opportunities to become self-reliant.
This belief found its most inspiring expression through Mangala Jagdish Gujarathi. Following the passing of her husband, she chose resilience over despair and transformed her skills into a source of strength for both her family and her community. She demonstrated that true empowerment begins when knowledge is translated into capability and self-reliance.
A skilled craftswoman, trainer, and entrepreneur, she trained more than 100 women and learners in tailoring, crochet, beadwork, traditional Rukhwat, jewellery making, and Tripurari Wati. She believed that every skill learned created an opportunity to live with confidence, independence, and dignity.
Through her craftsmanship, together with her husband’s pension, she ensured that all three of her children completed their education.
Through determination and perseverance, she not only secured their future but also fulfilled her responsibilities with dignity, including supporting each of their marriages. Her work reached customers across Maharashtra and overseas, proving that dedication, quality, and skill know no boundaries.
Her lifelong commitment to empowering others was recognised in 2004, when she received the Adarsh Mata Puraskar from Samata Parishad during a Mother’s Day programme in Nashik, in the presence of Members of Parliament, Members of the Legislative Assembly, and other distinguished guests. The honour recognised far more than motherhood—it celebrated resilience, self-reliance, entrepreneurship, and an unwavering commitment to family and society.
Through her life, skills became more than a means of livelihood they became a pathway to confidence, independence, and opportunity. Decades later, that same belief continues through JagMangal, where skill development, entrepreneurship, and youth and women empowerment remain central to its mission.

Inspired by this legacy, Tejas Gujarathi and Priya Gujarathi envisioned an institution that could extend these values beyond individual lives and into communities. This vision led to the establishment of JagMangal Social Foundation in 2019—a platform dedicated to creating opportunities through education, skill development, safety, sustainability, and community development.
Together, they transformed inherited values into organised social action, building partnerships with educational institutions, government agencies, industry, and communities. Every programme, every initiative, and every collaboration reflects a simple belief: lasting social impact is created when opportunity is shared.
Today, JagMangal continues a journey that began more than a century ago—not by preserving history, but by putting its values into action. Every student who learns, every young person who develops a skill, every woman who gains confidence, and every community that grows stronger becomes part of a legacy that continues to evolve through opportunity.
